Finland and Sweden are pretty dog-friendly, but they’ve got a bunch of rules when it comes to pets in public spaces, thanks to their law-abiding mentality. People usually love dogs, and you won’t find any scary or mean behavior. But, there are lots of rules, and folks don’t bend them much. Just think of it as a place where people love dogs and are all about safety, being considerate of others with allergies or fears, and keeping things clean.

You’ll find info about the rules posted clearly. Most restaurants won’t let dogs inside, but they’re cool with them hanging out on patios when it’s warm. In Helsinki, some places allow well-behaved dogs indoors, as long as other customers are okay with it and they stick to certain areas.

Dogs can hop on public transport, but they usually need to stay in designated pet areas, and there might be an extra fee.

You’ll need to keep your dog on a leash in city limits, including parks, and pick up after them. They’re not allowed on playgrounds, public beaches, or inside public buildings like museums, libraries, and churches. On the trails, lots of dogs get to go off leash.
When it comes to shopping centers, just check for signs at the entrances.

The Viking ferry crossing between Sweden and Finland was quite pet friendly.
