Documentation Required and how to get it:
You need to get an International Health Certificate signed by a vet. It does not have to be endorsed by APHIS (in the US)
Since there is no online information in English from the Honduran government, this information has been reported by travelers. There is a fee to pay at the airport in Honduras when your pet is inspected.
Additional Considerations
Microchip Requirements:
NA
Quarantine Requirements (if any):
None. However, there are reports of animals being kept overnight because the inspector was not on duty at the time of the arrival.
Timing your flight
There is an “Embargo” on flying dogs in CARGO out of Roatan and La Cieba during the hot months, which is generally April to September. Pets can still fly in-cabin.
Try to schedule a weekday flight to ensure a vet will be on-site to complete the pet inspection.
Differences in requirements between importing a dog or cat to Roatan vs. mainland Honduras
There do not appear to be any differences for people arriving with their pets by air except for there may be temperature variations which will determine if a pet can travel in cargo.
If a pet flies into mainland Honduras, pets can fly domestically to the islands or ride the ferry.
Is this country considered high-risk rabies for entry into the US by the CDC and the EU?
Honduras is not rabies-free.
