Top Activities for Dogs and Their Owners in Galveston, TX

The Beach
Galveston Island’s beaches are a dream come true for our pups. Endless sand to play in and waves to splash around make it a perfect day out. Just keep those leashes on to ensure everyone has a fun and safe time under the sun!
Galveston Island State Park
For an outdoor adventure, head to Galveston Island State Park. Here, the beach meets the bay, creating a wonderful playground for you and your dog. With fishing, camping, and hiking, it’s a paradise for nature lovers. The walking trails are beautiful, and you might even spot some interesting water birds. Don’t forget, there’s a small entrance fee and additional costs for campsites and rentals. Plan your visit ahead!
Dolphin Spotting Boat Tour
Bring your dog onboard for this 45 minute dolphin watching expedition leaving out of the harbor. Dogs who are not aggressive and who stay on-leash are welcome to join their family onboard. The boats have been updated to offer enclosed and heated tours, with a 360° view.
West End Dog Recreation Area
Close to our condo, the West End Dog Recreation Area is a fantastic spot for your dog to run and play off-leash. With separate areas for large and small dogs, it’s a safe and enjoyable place for all breeds. It’s open from 6 AM to 8 PM, giving you plenty of time for your pup to burn off some energy.
Practical Tip – Salty Dog Wash
After a fun-filled day at the beach or park, stop by Salty Dog Wash to get your pup cleaned up. Whether you choose their professional grooming services or prefer to do it yourself, they’ve got you covered.
Dog-Friendly Events
Krewe of Barkus and Meoux Parade
Don’t miss the Krewe of Barkus and Meoux Parade, a Mardi Gras celebration just for pets. The Humane Society created the Krewe of Barkus and Meoux Parade 23 years ago, and this crowd-pleasing event has been going strong ever since! There’s a costume contest so be sure your dog is dressed to impress!
Dog-Friendly Strolls

Dog-Friendly Downtown
If there’s a patio, Fido is welcome. From breweries to seaside seafood eateries, Galveston is a great place for you and your dog to hang out. Some bars across the island will allow your dog inside with you too. And if you’re in the mood for shopping, head over to The Strand, where many shops are happy to have your pet join the fun.
Bishop’s Palace
For a bit of local history and stunning architecture, take a walk by the 1892 Bishop’s Palace at 1402 Broadway St. While your dog can’t go inside, the surrounding area is perfect for a leisurely stroll. Admission is $15 per person.
Dog-Friendly Dining

Katie’s Seafood
For the freshest catch, head to Katie’s Seafood. The bay breeze and delicious seafood make for a great meal, and your pup will love the welcoming patio.
Galveston Island Brewing
Bring the whole family to Galveston Island Brewing. While the kids enjoy the playground, you can relax with a local Tiki Wheat Beer, and your dog can chill on the patio. It’s a taste of island life you don’t want to miss.
West-End Marina and Restaurants
Experience the lively atmosphere at West-End Marina and Restaurants. With live music, karaoke, and fantastic food, it’s a top spot for both you and your pet. The menu has something for everyone, including your dog.
Worth Leaving Fido Behind

Amusement Spots
While popular spots like Pleasure Pier, Moody Gardens aquarium, and Schlitterbahn Water Park are great, they’re not ideal for Fido. If visiting here is important to your family, find a good dog sitter or a vacation rental where it is okay for dog’s to stay unattended for a couple of hours.
The Historic Homes Tour
Visiting in May? The Historic Homes Tour by the Galveston Historical Foundation is a must-see. It’s a chance to explore the island’s architectural gems and soak up some history. The first time Kimberly attended the tour, she officially fell in love with Galveston. You might too!
Lone Star Rally
Galveston is always buzzing with activity, so you and your dog will never run out of things to do. If you prefer a quieter visit, avoid the Lone Star Rally in early November—it gets crowded and loud with the excitement of motorcycles.
